The Anthony Mackie meme is really a family of memes. One is a 2016 clip of him dancing in his seat with both hands on his head. The other is his pursed-lip smirk, the one that makes him look like he’s hiding a secret. Both went viral years after they were captured, and both still show up in reaction images, TikTok comments, and GIF-caption posts across the internet.

What Is the Anthony Mackie Meme?
The Anthony Mackie meme refers mainly to two viral formats. The first is a dancing GIF from a 2016 interview, where he shimmies in his seat with both hands on his head. The second is “the face,” a subdued, knowing smirk that fans say he wears in every photo.
The dancing version comes from the Captain America: Civil War press junket. It stayed fairly quiet for years, then resurfaced on X in early 2023 and exploded again on TikTok in early 2025. That delayed success is common with accidental memes. The clip had to wait for the right jokes.
The smirk version works differently. It isn’t tied to one moment. It’s a pattern people noticed across dozens of pictures, from press events to award shows. That’s why an Anthony Mackie meme pic of the smirk can come from almost any photo shoot he has done.
From my experience tracking reaction trends, memes like these last because they are flexible. The dance fits any “good news” caption. The smirk fits any “I know what you did” caption. Together, they have made Mackie an internet favorite well beyond Marvel fandom.
Origin of the Anthony Mackie Dancing Meme
The dance comes from a Spanish-language NBC Deportes interview, also shared through Telemundo Deportes, filmed in NYC on May 6, 2016. Mackie sat beside Sebastian Stan during the Civil War junket, and the viral moment appears around the 1:46 mark of the YouTube video.
The host asked playful questions, including one about superpowers. Mackie joked about flying and about owning a bar. The bar talk wasn’t random. He had a real-life bar venture in the early 2010s, so the answer carried genuine excitement.
When the interviewer mentioned friends showing up at Mackie’s bar, he agreed enthusiastically and broke into a little jig. He put his hands on his head and danced in his seat like someone celebrating a small win. Stan’s reaction next to him added to the charm.
What makes the clip so memeable is how out of context it looks. Without the audio, viewers have no idea what triggered the cheer. That gap lets people invent their own reason, which is exactly how reaction GIFs thrive.
How the Dancing Meme Spread Across Tumblr, X and TikTok
The dance took almost a decade to reach full meme status. It moved through three platforms, each adding a new layer of jokes. Here is a simple timeline:
| Date | Platform | What Happened |
|---|---|---|
| May 9, 2016 | Tumblr | @p1xer posted the earliest known GIFs, which earned 700+ notes |
| Early 2023 | X | Reposts of the clip resurfaced, with individual posts gaining 43K+ to 53K+ likes |
| Early 2025 | TikTok | TikTok users revived it with fresh captions and imitations |
| Mid-2025 | TikTok | Daylight-savings and seasonal-depression jokes pushed plays past 1M on top posts |
The Tumblr GIF set remains the original template. Most versions circulating today trace back to it. The first wave was mostly Marvel fans enjoying the banter between Mackie and Stan.
The 2023 revival on X was driven by oddly specific captions. Users wrote what the question “could have been,” like getting a surprise day off. Posts spread within days, and some collected tens of thousands of likes in a week.
TikTok gave the meme its biggest life in 2025. One TikToker paired it with a tunnel-walk clip, similar to a Spirit Tunnel entrance, and others joked about the clock change fixing their seasonal depression. Imitations of the hands-on-head dance became a trend of their own, with posts earning 70K to 200K likes.
The Anthony Mackie Meme Face: “He Knows Something”
The Anthony Mackie meme face is his pursed-mouth smirk. It looks like he is holding back a laugh or harboring a secret. Fans describe it as sarcasm and joy mixed together. People often call it “face face” or simply “doing the face.”
Origin of the Smirk Meme
The smirk meme had its breakout moment on March 15, 2021. Facebook user Jason Hyman shared a Mackie photo compilation captioned “Bruh Anthony Mackie always look like he know something about you.” The post drew 130K+ reactions.
The timing was perfect. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had just started airing, so Sam Wilson was everywhere. The Facebook page Marvellous Realm reposted it, gaining 4K+ likes and 2K+ shares.
By March 18, the image reached Reddit. On /r/marvelmemes it earned 16K+ upvotes in a day. It also spread through /r/thefalconandthews, where fans of the show added their own photos of the face.
How the Face Meme Spread
The smirk quickly grew into variations. On iFunny, a version earned 38K+ smiles. One popular variant paired the face with the classic “Guess what? Chicken butt” joke, which fits his expression almost too well.
On X, users like @J_Nova_Kane and @rodimusprime shared their own takes in April and May 2021. The Anthony Mackie meme picture format stayed simple: a photo of the smirk, crinkled eyes, and a caption about knowing someone’s business.
A newer variant uses an image of Mackie in the Captain America helmet. It kept the same energy but updated it for his new role. Some of these helmet posts crossed 25K+ likes, proving the face meme survived the switch from Falcon to Captain America.
Anthony Mackie Meme Smile vs. Smirk
People often mix up the smile and the smirk, but they serve different purposes. The Anthony Mackie meme smile is a full grin, usually from interview clips when a joke lands. The smirk is quieter and suggests he knows more than he says.
| Feature | Smile Meme | Smirk (“The Face”) Meme |
|---|---|---|
| Expression | Wide, open grin | Pursed-lip, barely-there smirk |
| Mood | Pure joy | Sarcasm, secrecy |
| Common Source | Interview clips, award shows | Photos, press events |
| Typical Caption | “When the plan works” | “He knows something about you” |
| Best Use | Celebrating good news | Calling out a friend |
The smile meme spread almost overnight when certain clips hit social media. It shows up in templates for wholesome reactions. Fans like it because his joy looks genuine, not performed.
When I build reaction galleries, I keep these two separate. The smile suits positive replies. The smirk suits teasing. Using the wrong one changes the tone of the whole post, so the difference matters more than it seems.
The “Son” and “Fat” Anthony Mackie Meme Variants
Searches for “son Anthony Mackie meme” and “Anthony Mackie son Anthony Mackie meme” usually come from fatherly-caption versions. Fans pair his knowing smirk with lines like a dad who already knows what his son did. The expression fits parental “I’m not mad, just disappointed” energy.
Some people also search this phrase because Mackie is a real-life father of four sons. That adds a layer of fun to the dad-style captions. But the memes themselves use his public photos, not images of his children, and that’s the right line to keep.
The “fat Anthony Mackie meme” refers to edited images. These are face-swaps and stretched photoshops that exaggerate his features for comedy. They are fan edits, not real photos, and they belong to the same wave of absurd image galleries as the cat that looks like Mackie.
My honest take is that these variants perform well for a day, then fade. The original face and dance are what keep bringing people back. If you’re making content, stick to edits that play with the expression rather than mocking someone’s body.
How Anthony Mackie Reacted to His Memes
Mackie has openly acknowledged his memes and played along, though he admits he doesn’t fully understand the face meme. His reactions came mostly during the Captain America: Brave New World press run in 2025.
The Dad Jokes Sit-Down
On February 19, 2025, Mackie sat down with co-star Danny Ramirez for a Dad Jokes session with @dadsaysjokes. The clip passed 200K+ likes on Instagram in a day. He looked puzzled but laughed when shown the face meme.
He said he had seen the meme but didn’t get why people found his face so funny. That confusion only made fans love it more. The moment felt like the meme coming full circle.
Recreating the Dance on Jimmy Fallon
On July 23, 2025, Mackie popped up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Sitting on Fallon’s couch, he redid the exact hands-on-head move that went viral. The audience cheered and Fallon laughed along.
@FallonTonight shared the clip on X, and fans praised his willingness to poke fun at his own internet fame. It was a rare case of digital moments crossing over to late-night TV.
Film Context: Captain America: Brave New World
Much of the 2025 meme wave lined up with Captain America: Brave New World. The film made Mackie the new Captain America, so his face was all over trailers, posters, and interviews. That constant visibility fed fresh memes.
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Anthony Mackie | Sam Wilson / Captain America |
| Danny Ramirez | Joaquin Torres / Falcon |
| Harrison Ford | Thaddeus Ross |
| Tim Blake Nelson | Samuel Sterns |
| Shira Haas | Ruth Bat-Seraph |
| Carl Lumbly | Isaiah Bradley |
| Giancarlo Esposito | Seth Voelker |
| Liv Tyler | Betty Ross |
| Xosha Roquemore | Leila Taylor |
The press tour gave fans endless material. Every interview became a chance to catch the smirk again. Ramirez joining him on the tour also brought new banter, similar to the old Mackie and Sebastian Stan chemistry.
Some memes even targeted people who had already seen the movie. Fans used his face as a warning not to spoil anything. It’s a good example of how film releases and meme culture now feed each other.
Fan-Favorite Anthony Mackie Meme Pictures
A fan-voted list ranked the 18 funniest Anthony Mackie memes. The top entries by votes show which jokes people love most. Some well-known titles include:
- Now That You Mention It… – often picked as the best Anthony Mackie meme for its sharp wit
- I’d Argue They’re Both Confused – a top-voted entry built on his puzzled look
- Where’s The Lie? – a reaction image for brutally honest takes
- Tell Us What You’re Hiding Anthony – a pure smirk meme
- The Crossover We Needed – pairing Mackie with a Kevin Hart picture
- The Falcon Needs His Wings Apparently – a Falcon-era joke
- Cut The Check! and He Does It All – celebrating his range
Other favorites came from TikTok and X. There’s the Niecy Nash reaction, a reality-TV reaction format, his sweet potato pie smile tweet, and a McDonald’s Valentine’s post. Some pulled 20K to 100K+ likes, with one /r/memes post passing 60K.
The “part of my plan” meme is another reliable pick. It pairs his confident grin with a caption about everything going as planned. It works because his expression already looks like he planned it.
How to Use an Anthony Mackie Meme Pic Effectively
The best way to use an Anthony Mackie meme pic is to match the expression to the message. Use the dance for celebration, the smirk for teasing, and the grin for pure joy. Getting that match right is most of the job.
Keep captions short and specific. The most viral posts used oddly specific situations, like a surprise refund or a friend avoiding eye contact. Vague captions rarely perform as well as ones people instantly relate to.
For creators, the original Tumblr GIF and the 2021 smirk compilation are the cleanest templates. They’re recognizable and don’t need extra explanation. When I’ve tested reaction images in social posts, familiar templates consistently beat heavily edited versions.
Timing also matters. The meme sees spikes around new Marvel releases, award shows, and seasonal moments like the daylight-savings change. Posting during those windows gives your version a much better chance of landing.
